Is electricity important?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electric power transmission<\/strong> is the bulk movement of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrical_energy\">electrical energy<\/a> from a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_generation\">generating<\/a> site, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_plant\">power plant<\/a>, to an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrical_substation\">electrical substation<\/a>. A long conductor used to facilitate such movement is called a <em>transmission line<\/em>. The interconnected transmission lines form a <em>transmission network<\/em>. In the power industry, electric power transmission is distinct from the local wiring between high-voltage substations and customers, which is typically referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_power_distribution\">electric power distribution<\/a>, even though <em>power distribution<\/em> is semantically a type of <em>power transmission<\/em> in common parlance. To increase the efficiency of long-distance electric power transmission, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltage\">voltage<\/a> is often increased for transmission, then reduced for local distribution. This is because higher voltages corresponds to lower <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_current\">currents<\/a> and lower losses caused by such currents. The AC voltage level is often changed with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transformer\">transformers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wide_area_synchronous_grid\">wide area synchronous grid<\/a>, known as an <em>interconnection<\/em> in North America, directly connects generators delivering AC power with the same relative <em>frequency<\/em> to many consumers. The transmission system is in blue.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most North American transmission lines are high-voltage <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three-phase_electric_power\">three-phase<\/a> AC, although <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single-phase_electric_power\">single phase<\/a> AC is sometimes used in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Railway_electrification_system\">railway electrification systems<\/a>. DC technology is used for greater efficiency over longer distances, typically hundreds of miles. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High-voltage_direct_current\">High-voltage direct current<\/a> (HVDC) technology is also used in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Submarine_power_cable\">submarine power cables<\/a> (typically longer than 30 miles (50&nbsp;km)), and in the interchange of power between grids that are not mutually synchronized.
